MAKING YOUR OWN OILS

A good oil starts with a good base. Some suggest using Virgin Olive Oil but I find that pure works just as well and also has less of an olive scent (pure is the third pressing of the olive where virgin in the second). Its more economical too! A good rule of thumb is 2 ounces oil per 2 tablespoons herb or mixture. Pour the oil into your mortar. Now add your herb a little bit at a time, crushing it into the oil with your pestle. After you have added all the herb and combined it well, pour it into a container of your choosing. Two ounces isn't very much so a small glass bottle works well and remember the darker the bottle, the better your oil will keep. Store the bottle in a dark, previously consecrated place for about three days. On the fourth day check the oil to see if it has absorbed enough of the scent. If it has, its now ready for use! However if you find the scent too weak for your liking, strain the oil using a piece of cheesecloth (paper towels are NOT an acceptable substitute!). Add two more tablespoons of the herb or mixture and store for three more days. Sometimes you might have to add a bit more oil as well to bring it back to two ounces. You can repeat this process of scenting your oil until its as strong as you desire. For most oils I've found that once is enough but noses differ and what's strong to me may not be to you. I find it helpful to visualize the purpose for which I'm making the oil throughout the process. Some people like to say a little chant pertaining to that certain oil while making it. This part is entirely up to you.

Floral Oils :
Simply add 2 tablespoons worth of your preferred flower's petals to the oil. While the following recipe is for Rose Oil, I am quite certain that it will also work well with other flowers.
* In a clean glass crock, pour in one half cup extra virgin olive oil.
* Add to the oil enough freshly picked rose petals to cover the oil.
* Let stand 24 hours.
* Strain oil through cheese cloth pressing all oil from rose petals.
* Discard the pressed petals.
* Add fresh rose petals to this oil and repeat.
* Repeat the process until desired strength of scent (varies with fragrance of roses used). Another option, particularly suited for human consumption, is solvent distillation. In this method an alcohol is used to extract the essential oils from the plant. Leaves and petals (and sometimes thorns) are used for Magickal purposes. DO NOT USE RUBBING ALCOHOL!!!
* In one cup of un-flavored Vodka (or other denatured alcohol) place enough plant matter (petals, leaves, or thorns) to cover the liquid.
* Let stand covered tightly for two weeks.
* Press the oil from the plant matter through cheesecloth.
* The oil and alcohol product you now have is natural rose perfume.
* Freeze the liquid you now have for 24 hours.
* The oil will freeze, the alcohol will not. Remove the frozen rose oil from your freezer and store in tightly sealed container.
* Reserve the remaining alcohol for use again. This is not the easier of the two methods put does deliver a nearly pure essential oil. Remember, one ounce of Rose Oil is a lot of Rose Oil.
